Spoilers for the episode are found in this synopsis.Back in 1864, Katherine is teaching Damon how to kill humans by tricking a man in his carriage to stop.Damon is reluctant at first, but then he tastes the blood on Katherine's lips when she kisses him after feeding.Stefan and Elena awake to see Damon at the foot of the bed, announcing how he plans to get Emily's grimoire, which will open the tomb to release Katherine.First, they need to find Gilbert's journal.In another flashback, Katherine is playing with Damon in bed when they are interrupted by Emily who says her mistress, Miss Pearl, has come to speak with Katherine.Katherine tells Emily to tell Mr.Salvatore that she has stepped out.When Emily asks which one, Katherine replies, "Both".Pearl suggests it is time to leave because the town is talking about her staying with the Salvatore's and an elixir made from Vervain was dropped off by Honoria Fell at the apothecary for Pearl to sell.It is discovered that Pearl's daughter is Anna.We see Anna in a motel room where she instructs the newly turned, Ben, on how to be a vampire so he can control himself when he's around Bonnie.Elena goes through her family memorabilia to find the journal and tells Stefan that she believes Damon was acting out of love, but Stefan doesn't agree with this.Elena finds a wire muzzle and closes the box just as Jeremy comes in and explains that he loaned the Gilbert journal to Mr.Saltzman after he used it to write his history report.Alaric is alone at the high school where he reads the journal.In a flashback, Johnathan Gilbert meets to discuss the vampire compass; the "church idea" and the need for every man in town to help get rid of the vampires with Barnette Lockwood and Giuseppe Salvatore.Alaric makes photocopies of the Gilbert journal and puts them in his locker just as Anna comes into the school.Alaric realizes he isn't alone so he takes his weapon and fires when he notices Stefan in the classroom.Stefan is able to catch the stake.Stefan wants to know who Alaric is, why he's in town and where the journal is.Anna is at the motel reading the journal while Ben is getting ready for his date with Bonnie.A flashback shows Pearl begging Katherine to be careful when she expresses her desire to turn Stefan and Damon.Pearl starts to flirt with Johnathan Gilbert.Giuseppe starts to question Damon's sense of duty, but Stefan defends him.Their father announces that the town plans to kill all the vampires.Jenna and Damon work to prepare dinner while talking about past dating fiascos.Stefan warns Alaric not to seek revenge on Damon for the death of his wife, Isobel, whose body was never recovered.Elena tells Damon a lie when she says that he can trust Stefan.Back in 1864, Damon made Stefan promise not to tell their father that Katherine was one of the vampires.While playing video games, Jeremy and Damon discuss the hot-weird Anna and then Stefan shows up.During her date with Ben, Bonnie tells him that she would be willing to die for her best friend Elena.Damon asks Jeremy about the Gilbert journal and Jeremy said he talked to Anna about it.Damon goes to find Anna and Stefan tells Elena that he took Alaric's copy of the journal.Jeremy and Anna meet at the Grill while Damon keeps a watchful eye.Another flashback shows Damon expressing concern for the safety of Katherine and Pearl.Damon recognizes that Anna is Pearl's daughter.Elena and Stefan go through the journal for information that will tell them where Emily's grimoire has been hidden.In another flashback, Giuseppe tells Stefan that his secrets will go to the grave with him and Stefan suggests that vampires aren't evil.Anna is discovered in her hotel room by Damon.Elena and Stefan determine they need to dig up Giuseppe's grave to find the grimoire.In a flashback, we see Katherine seducing Stefan before feeding on him.Katherine is then poisoned by Vervain that Giuseppe placed in Stefan's drink.Giuseppe comes in and tells Stefan to go get the Sheriff.Anna tells Damon that she was responsible for turning Logan because she believe she needed his ancestor's journal in order to find the grimoire.Anna suggests that she and Damon work together in order to open the tomb, but Damon tells her that he only works alone.Bonnie can sense that Ben is a vampire after kissing him.When Bonnie tries to escape, Ben grabs her angrily from behind.Stefan gets the grimoire from his father's grave, but Damon appears just as the book is opened.Damon feels both fooled by Elena and betrayed by his brother Stefan.Damon gives Elena his blood and threatens to turn her unless Stefan turns the grimoire over to him.Stefan gives it over.In a flashback, we see Damon attempting to stop the townspeople from taking away a muzzled Katherine.Giuseppe announces that if Damon becomes a sympathizer he will be killed with all the vampires.Stefan tells Elena that Katherine's capture was his entire fault and in a flashback, Damon blames it on Stefan.Stefan goes downstairs to find an aspiring for Elena only to find Anna in the house.In the last flashback, we see Pearl ordering Anna to get Emily before being captured by Johnathan Gilbert when the compass points to her.Emily confides in Anna that there is a way to protect the captured vampires.Stefan rushes back to Elena's room only to find she has disappeared.Quotes from the Episode.
