It

During the holiday season, studios launch their biggest family film releases and television networks crank out the traditional heartwarming classics of yesteryear. But who says the holidays are strictly for snuggling with the kids in front of a family film and warding off kisses from Aunt Mildred after she's had a little too much spiked egg nog? This season strive to add more romance to the holidays by renting these great date movies that highlight the holidays.(Better yet, buy copies and give them to your favorite date as gifts.).Serendipity (2001) - Directed by Peter Chelsom and starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. This whimsical romance begins in New York City five days before Christmas when a man and woman fight over the last pair of black gloves at Bloomingdale's.They decide to split the gloves between them and spend a wonderful time together at a skating rink and later at a small restaurant named Serendipity.Although he is more than ready to get involved with her (despite his girlfriend for whom he was buying the gloves), she says that fate will bring them together if it were meant to be.They part without knowing each other's names or telephone numbers; their only link is his name written on a five dollar bill and her name written inside of a book. This is a smart comedy that will make you believe in fate - at least for 90 minutes.Sleepless in Seattle (1993) - Directed by Nora Ephron and starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. While driving to her fiancé's house on Christmas Eve, a newspaper reporter hears a radio talk show in which a son pleads for help in finding his father a new wife. The reporter is instantly smitten when the widower confesses over the radio how much he loved his former wife and how he's waiting for the right woman to come along again.Although she lives in Baltimore and he's in Seattle, she initiates a quirky long-distance relationship through the son that culminates in a New York visit to the Empire State Building. It takes a long time for the lovers to finally meet in person, but is well worth the wait. You've Got Mail (1998) - Directed by Nora Ephron and starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.Tom and Meg are falling in love with each other all over again in this wonderful comedy. An enchanting independent children's bookstore owner and a ruthless chain bookstore owner are instant enemies when they meet in person. However, unbeknownst to them, they are simultaneously falling in love online through a cyber romance. The poignant Thanksgiving party scenes and Christmas memories punctuate what's missing in their lives. This is an extremely romantic movie set in New York during the winter.(This film is best watched with some hot chocolate and a candy cane stirrer, with a box of tissues nearby.).Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) - Directed by Sharon Maguire and starring Renée Zellweger and Colin Firth.A thirty-something, overweight single British woman leaves her job after a disastrous fling with her boss (Hugh Grant as a charming cad). She has a brief and unpleasant discussion with the son of a family friend at a Christmas party, where they immediate dislike either other. After running into this handsome human rights lawyer again and again over the next few months, they develop a far more amiable relationship.Crude and rude at times, but always funny, this R-rated date film is great for the holidays.(Be warned - the sequel isn't nearly as good.).While You Were Sleeping (1995) - Directed by Jon Turteltaub and starring Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman.A lonely token collector at the Chicago train station has a long-standing crush on a man who falls into a coma after being attacked at the station and dumped on the tracks.Mistaken as his fiancée, she continues the deception during Christmas festivities with his family. When she meets his brother, however, she develops an even bigger crush on him. It's great fun to watch Bullock figuring out which brother she likes best and trying to extricate herself from her web of lies. This is a gentle, bittersweet romance for the holidays. When Harry Met Sally (1989) - Directed by Rob Reiner and starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.A magazine reporter and a political consultant meet in college and spend the next twelve years fluctuating between enemies, friends, and lovers. One holiday season, however, their lives change forever.Christmas and New Year's Eve play important roles in this classic date movie. This R-rated film is highly entertaining with lots of sexual misconduct, chemistry between the stars, and biting observations about relationships.Warm up your holiday season this year with any of these six great date movies. You won't need any mistletoe.Copyright 2006 Leslie Halpern.
